For Exercise 1.3 please post the answers to the following questions as a reply on the blog post.

Replies are due by 4:00pm on Thursday, February 28th.

  1. What is my argument? (Hint: this should be your thesis and how what you have identified as Cohen’s stance demonstrates your argument).
  2. How do I motivate my argument?
  3. How do I prove my points are specific to my argument and therefore rule out other arguments? (Think: Why is my argument right and not another argument?)

For next week please keep in mind the following:

  1. Please read 81-87 of Motivating Your Argument. This is available under the course readings on the website.
  2. If you have not already, please turn in your Rough Draft for Essay 1 to me as soon as possible so that I can return it to you with comments as soon as possible.
  3. Exercise 1.3 is due on Thursday, February 28th. It will be on the website shortly.
  4. Please keep in mind your paper is due hard copy in class Tuesday, March 5th. Please note my policy is to lower your grade by 1/3 of a letter for each 24 hour period the paper is late starting immediately after class is finished.
  5. I am already noticing some issues with attendance. Please note that attendance and participation are 15% of your overall final grade. Routinely missing class will negatively impact your grade significantly. If there are extenuating circumstances for the absences PLEASE come speak with me.

Essay 1 Assignment

PROGRESSION 1 ASSIGNMENT: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS

For this assignment, you will perform an in-depth rhetorical analysis of “Monster Culture (Seven Theses)” by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen. A rhetorical analysis essay systematically examines one or more rhetorical features of a text in order to deeply explore how they work to achieve the text’s purpose. In a rhetorical analysis essay, you are not simply concerned with what the text is saying but instead with how the text is constructed, and why the writer might have selected certain rhetorical features or strategies.

Essay Assignment: Analyze a few significant aspects of “Monster Culture” in order to develop an argument regarding the intended or imagined audience for that essay. You should aim to:

1) characterize the intended audience, and

2) evaluate Cohen’s stance towards his topic and audience To do so, you must:

3) analyze and discuss the functions of Cohen’s rhetorical choices within “Monster Culture,” and

4) consider why such choices might exist in academic essays in general.

Your essay must contain a persuasive thesis claim that it develops and supports through analysis of evidence from the text. Imagine that you are writing for other freshman scholars who have read “Monster Culture” and find the text to be rather difficult.
Goals:

• Identify a problem or question worth addressing, using a passage or personal
experience that will reward close reading.

• Formulate a thesis claim that makes a strong, insightful (i.e. not obvious) argument.

• Establish a motive for the essay in your introduction. Here you will answer the “So
What?” question, suggesting why your essay is important and interesting to an
intelligent reader. Draw out the implications of the argument in your conclusion.

• Structure the essay around your central claim, making sure that each paragraph is
adding an essential piece to your argument.

• Use evidence persuasively, quoting and analyzing the text when necessary,
summarizing or paraphrasing accurately and responsibly when appropriate. Do not provide evidence from other sources or make general assertions (e.g. claims about “human nature”).

• Adhere to all relevant formatting guidelines described in the course syllabus. The final draft must be between 1400 and 1600 words.

Zero Draft Essay 1

The goal of this exercise is to produce a very rough draft (a “zero draft”) of your first essay. This will help you find raw material (i.e. potential evidence and rough ideas) that can be refined and further developed in your formal draft.

Due in Hard Copy Handed to Me in Class Thursday, February 14th

Assignment

  1. Read the Essay 1 Prompt
  2. In one paragraph, offer a summary of “Monster Culture (Seven Theses).” Ensure that you define what Cohen means by the term “monster.”
  3. Answer the following questions:
    1. Who is Cohen writing for?
    2. What is one reason you think Cohen is writing for this audience?
    3. What is another reason you think Cohen is writing for this audience?

Please note in order to properly and thoroughly answer the above questions you should gather ample amounts of evidence from the text in the form of quotes. You should also consider why this proves your point that Cohen is writing for the audience you think he is writing for and not any other audience. You should try to be as specific is possible. How you answer these questions should be very rough and messy. You should feel free to answer in the form of bullets, notes, or quick listing. You should not be presenting polished perfect paragraphs. 

4. Include a one-paragraph self-evaluation  in which you briefly explain what challenges you are encountering as you attempt to develop your argument, and how your understanding of Cohen’s essay has been deepened and/or been complicated since the first time you read it.
